Outsourced DPO Services (DPO as a Service)

Under the UK GDPR, public authorities and many organisations that process personal data on a large scale must appoint a Data Protection Officer. Recruiting a full-time, suitably qualified DPO is expensive and can be difficult. Our outsourced DPO service gives you an independent, experienced Data Protection Officer for a fraction of the cost.

As your outsourced data protection officer, MSCL will:

  • Advise you and your staff on your obligations under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018
  • Monitor compliance, including policies, training, audits and records of processing
  • Advise on Data Protection Impact Assessments and monitor their outcomes
  • Act as the contact point for the Information Commissioner's Office and for individuals whose data you process
  • Support you through personal data breaches, from initial assessment to ICO reporting

Our DPO as a service model is flexible: choose a set number of days each month, an annual retainer or support on demand.

Subject Access Request (DSAR) Service and SAR Redaction

Individuals have the right to access their personal data, and you normally have one calendar month to respond. Complex requests, large volumes of records and sensitive third-party information make this hard to manage alongside day-to-day work. Our DSAR service takes the pressure off by handling requests from start to finish:

  • Validating requests and confirming identity
  • Searching systems, emails and paper records
  • Careful SAR redaction of third-party and exempt information
  • Preparing clear, compliant response letters and disclosure bundles
  • Clearing backlogs of overdue requests and putting processes in place to prevent them recurring

Freedom of Information and Environmental Information Requests

For public authorities, we manage Freedom of Information Act and Environmental Information Regulations requests, including backlog management, exemptions advice, public interest tests and redaction, so that every response is accurate and on time.

GDPR Audits, DPIAs and Compliance Policies

A GDPR audit is the quickest way to understand where your organisation stands. We review how personal data flows through your organisation, assess your policies, contracts and security measures, and give you a prioritised, practical action plan. We can then help you deliver it, from privacy notices and retention schedules to Data Protection Impact Assessments and data breach procedures.

NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT)

We help NHS organisations, GP practices, care providers and suppliers complete and evidence the DSPT, close any gaps and maintain compliance year after year.

Records Management and Training

Good records management underpins every area of compliance. We help you organise, retain and dispose of records correctly, and we deliver practical training on GDPR, FOI, records management and health and safety so that your staff know exactly what to do.

Why Choose an Outsourced DPO From MSCL?

  • UK-wide coverage – based in Buckinghamshire, working with clients across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, as well as Africa.
  • Fast response – our advisory service is available when urgent compliance issues arise.

Outsourced DPO Services: Frequently Asked Questions

Both carry out the same statutory tasks. An outsourced DPO is provided under a service contract rather than employment, which gives you access to a specialist with broad experience across many organisations, without recruitment costs, and with built-in cover for holidays and absence.

Yes. The UK GDPR expressly allows a Data Protection Officer to be a staff member or to fulfil the role under a service contract. What matters is that the DPO has expert knowledge of data protection law, is properly resourced, reports to the highest level of management and is able to act independently.

In most cases we can begin within days. We start with an onboarding review of your current policies, records of processing and any open requests or incidents, then agree priorities and a regular reporting schedule with you.

Absolutely. Many clients start with a single project, such as clearing a backlog of subject access requests, preparing for an ICO enquiry or completing the DSPT, and then move on to ongoing support. Our contracts are designed to be flexible.

We support local authorities and other public bodies, NHS trusts, GP practices and care providers, schools and academies, housing associations, charities and private businesses of all sizes.
